Today we continued to listen to the podcast about asylum throughout history and even today
Here are a few notes from today:
Trump making it harder for immigrants to apply for asylum
President undermining original idea of asylum
Asylum- seeking help because homeland is too dangerous
S.S. St. Louis turned away from U.S. in 1939 with 900 Jewish passengers aboard. Those passengers ended up going back to Europe and being eventually killed
>>This occurrence drives the idea for our policy for asylum today
Non refeorma (Not returning)
Established during a 1951 United Nations
Its not enough for our country to be accepting and not rasicst, oppressive or sexist, we also don't tolerate when other countries do it, and we are accepting of those who are victims of those things in their own countries
Persecution- A reason to be able to get into the U.S.
Types of Persecution
>>Race
>>Nationality
>>Religion
>>Political Views
>>Social Group
>>Domestic Violence (Put under the list under Obama)
There are other types of persecution
>>Gang Violence
>>Terrorism
>>Sexuality and Gender Orientation persecution
These are all a part of Surge, when a lot of people come to the country
